The University of Waterloo has collected another accolade.
The latest edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) global university rankings has recognized the University of Waterloo – once again – as one of the world’s top science, technology, engineering and mathematics universities.
The university was ranked 25th in the world for computer science. This ranking puts it ahead of well-known American technology schools like the University of Texas at Austin (#28), California Institute of Technology (#39) and Yale University (#35), and just behind Columbia University (#20) and Cornell University (#14).Internationally, the University of Waterloo was ahead of the highest-ranked universities in Germany (Technical University of Munich at #29), France (Institut Polytechnique de Paris at #31) and Japan (The University of Tokyo at #45). In fact, only 12 universities in the world outside of the United States were ranked higher than the University of Waterloo.
The University of Waterloo was also ranked #33 globally for electrical engineering, ahead of Purdue University (#35) and Columbia University (#45), and once again just behind Cornell University (#32).
In the broad Engineering & Technology category, which includes all disciplines of engineering as well as computer science, the University of Waterloo and Cornell University were essentially tied, which makes them an excellent point of comparison for those who are more familiar with the latter.
In total, the University of Waterloo had five programs rank in the global top-50 and 12 in the top-100.
QS is the world’s largest international higher education network. It ranks the world’s top universities on 51 subjects based on factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, student-to-faculty ratio, the proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students. The rankings provide a comparative analysis on the performance of 14,435 individual university programs, taken by students at 1,453 universities, found in 86 locations across the world, in 51 academic disciplines and five broad Faculty Areas.
This new ranking follows a report from Maclean’s Magazine recognizing UWaterloo as the top university in Canada for engineering and computer science, and “Canada’s Most Innovative University”.
