UWaterloo ranks #1 in Canada for computer science and engineering

University of Waterloo held the top spot for computer science, engineering and mathematics in Maclean's Magazine's annual Canadian university rankings.

The University of Waterloo (UWaterloo) can claim Canada’s top computer science, engineering and mathematics programs, according to Maclean’s Magazine – Canada’s premier current affairs magazine. This result further cements the UWaterloo reputation as Canada’s top technology university.

UWaterloo was also named Canada’s second-best comprehensive university – which includes schools with a good balance of research and academics – and ranked third overall out of 49 post-secondary institutes included in the study. Wilfrid Laurier University, also located in Waterloo, ranked 8th in the comprehensive category and 24th overall.

" This is wonderful news across the board. Congratulations to our faculty, staff and students in mathematics and computer science and to our colleagues across the tracks in engineering who have all worked hard to earn this top spot in Maclean’s annual rankings. "

Mark Giesbrecht

Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Waterloo

The high rank for UWaterloo in computer science, engineering and mathematics comes as no surprise. The school is a top recruiting ground for companies in the Bay Area and is home to the world’s largest concentration of math and computer science talent. The engineering school is Canada’s largest, with more students enrolled than MIT and Stanford University combined.

Students at UWaterloo have the highest entry averages in Ontario, with more than a quarter of all new students entering with a 95%+ average. If you look at engineering students, the number increases to 40.1% of all students with a 95%+ entry average. In mathematics, which includes computer science, those numbers increase to 54.6% and in software engineering 85.5% of new students held a 95%+ entry average.
