There was a lot of exciting news in Waterloo over the last month, including multiple major government funding announcements, significant news about Toyota’s manufacturing plans and reporting on a US tech exodus to Canada.
Last week, the Canadian federal government announced funding for four Waterloo-based quantum technology businesses and organizations totaling $41 million. Delivered through the Strategic Innovation Fund, this money further strengthens Canada’s position in the world of quantum computing and machine learning and further affirms Waterloo’s nickname “Quantum Valley.”
Last week, Waterloo-based BlackBerry announced that it has acquired Cylance, an artificial intelligence and cybersecurity company, for $1.4 billion. This acquisition makes BlackBerry – once known primarily for building the world’s most secure smartphones – one of the world’s largest cybersecurity firms.
