Startup Genome releases list of world’s top startup ecosystems

Startup Genome released a new report ranking the world's best startup ecosystems. Check out who made the top-15 in this article.

A new report from Startup Genome called the Global Startup Ecosystem Report for 2019 has highlighted the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor’s steady ascent as a tech startup powerhouse. For the first time, Toronto-Waterloo cracked the world’s top 15 ecosystems, and was crowned Canada’s top startup ecosystem.

Here are the top 15 ecosystems from the 2019 Global Startup Ecosystem Ranking:

1. Silicon Valley

2. New York City

3-4. London and Beijing (tied)

5. Boston

6-7. Tel Aviv and Los Angeles (tied)

8. Shanghai

9. Paris

10. Berlin

11. Stockholm

12. Seattle

13. Toronto-Waterloo

14. Singapore

15. Amsterdam-StartupDelta

In total, the report lists the top 30 startup ecosystems worldwide, ranking them on a number of factors including funding, market reach, connectedness, talent, experience and knowledge.

The study comprises data from more than one million companies, 150 ecosystems and survey data from more than 10,000 startup executives from around the globe. In the last report, Toronto-Waterloo was ranked 16th in the world.

“Being recognized in the top 15 places to grow a startup globally is a good indication of the investments our government partners have been making in supporting the growth of our ecosystem and putting Toronto-Waterloo on the map,” Iain Klugman, CEO of Communitech, told BetaKit.

“It also recognizes the hard work and determination of entrepreneurs, investors, government and private partners to build a world-class ecosystem, the best is yet to come.”

This report is just another feather in the Waterloo community’s cap after being named “the best place in Canada to start a tech company,” recognized by CBRE for its “exceptional” tech talent and making a very good showing in the Impact Centre’s list of high-potential Canadian tech companies.
