Quantum technologies are the future and Waterloo has the complete theory-to-commercialization ecosystem needed to lead the coming quantum revolution.
Don’t believe us? Here’s what smartphone inventor, technology visionary, quantum evangelist and Waterloo resident Mike Lazaridis has said on the subject:
“Canada is very much at the centre of quantum computing. The ingredients that made Silicon Valley singularly successful are becoming part of the Waterloo culture today – there’s a vibrant ecosystem of about 1000 [technology] companies in various stages, from start-up to pre-IPO… [We] have the foundation for seizing the next quantum revolution here in Canada.”
Waterloo is at the forefront of quantum research and commercialization.
Known as “Quantum Valley,” for more than two decades our community has pushed the boundaries of quantum research at places like Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. In that time, private donors and public funders have invested more than $1.5 billion into our quantum ecosystem.
Today, Waterloo is home to top research institutes, more than a dozen quantum technology companies, a $100 million quantum venture fund and a growing community of commercialization and support hubs that can help quantum companies – or companies interested in developing quantum products – grow. Our innovators are creating new technologies that will revolutionize security, communication and big data. Much of this work is happening in a dense area with a 5km/3.1mi radius.
