As the month of September restored motivation, routines, and productivity, a flurry of new lists and reports have highlighted the dynamism of Waterloo’s ecosystem and the benefits of expanding your company to our unique community.
Here are seven great business and investment stories from the last month:
1. Waterloo on Site Selection Magazine’s list of top Canadian regions
Site Selection Magazine’s 2019 Competitiveness Rankings included Waterloo in a list of Canada’s Top 20 Regions, and named Ontario the number one province in Canada for FDI. To learn why we were included, check out the piece we wrote, and view their initial publication for more information.
2. Audi partners with Waterloo company to deploy innovative AI
New technology from Waterloo-based company Darwin AI has been helping Audi, the German automotive giant, develop an artificial neural network to improve their autonomous driving capabilities. 3. Waterloo prominent on Canadian Business Growth 500 and Startup 50
Waterloo celebrated the appearance of 11 Waterloo companies on the Canadian Business Growth 500 list, and another 4 on their Startup 50 list. We dug a little deeper and discovered that when businesses with operations in Waterloo are included, more than two dozen companies on the list are located in our community. 4. New service from Communitech will improve international hiring process for start-ups
At their Annual General Meeting this passed month, Communitech announced the launch of a new service called “Communitech Outposts” which will provide tailored support to scaling companies looking to globalize their business. Customers can leverage the service to manage hiring requirements that vary across international jurisdictions. Read Communitech’s official press release to learn more about the program.
5. New cluster map explores Waterloo’s quantum system
Waterloo is at the forefront of quantum research and commercialization, earning the name “Quantum Valley” over the past two decades. We’ve put together a Waterloo Region Quantum Ecosystem map that showcases the many companies, research institutions and organizations that are driving our growth in this industry and contributing to its success.
6. Local tech company wins Forbes innovation award
Kitchener tech company BinSentry won the 2019 THRIVE-Forbes Innovation Icon Award at the Forbes AgTech Summit in Indianapolis this month. The company developed an Agricultural IoT sensor for feed-mills and vertical integrators, which provides accurate and timely inventory data. The award willhelp grow their business in the U.S. market. 7. UW Velocity restructures and unveils new on-campus program called Concept
In early September, the University of Waterloo’s infamous start-up program announced that their on-campus services have evolved into an exciting pre-incubator program called Concept. While Velocity continues to incubate fast-growing companies in off-campus location, Concept will provide unique, accessible support for young entrepreneurs.
