The warm and sunny days are upon us in Waterloo and even with all this heat there are still some exciting announcements this month, including a major manufacturing expansion and additional kudos to Waterloo’s tech talent!
Here are five great business and investment stories:
1. Waterloo is one of CBRE’s fastest-growing “opportunity markets” in North America
In late July, real estate and investment giant CBRE released its 2019 Scoring Tech Talent report. The big headline was that Toronto was listed in the top-3 among large centres for total tech workforce – which is great news for the Toronto-Waterloo Corridor. Waterloo was listed as the third fastest-growing “opportunity market,” with a 40% increase in tech jobs over the past five years. We wrote all about it here.
2. ATS Automation announces a major expansion
One of Waterloo’s best kept secrets, ATS Automation is a truly global company with 4,400 employees and more than $1.25 billion in revenues in the last fiscal year. In July, they announced a 122,000 square foot expansion at their headquarters in Cambridge, including 67,000 square feet of manufacturing space and a 19,000 square foot innovation centre. 3. Rogers announces the creation of a 5G innovation lab in Waterloo
Communitech and Rogers have announced a three-year partnership that will see the two organizations open a 5G innovation lab in Waterloo. The new lab will develop and launch technology for smart city, Internet-of-Things and enterprise 5G applications. Read full coverage from BetaKit.
4. Huffington Post ranks Waterloo Region second best city in Canada for jobs
A new report from BMO’s Labour Market Report Card for the second quarter of 2019 identifies the best cities in Canada to find jobs. Waterloo Region moves up from its previous rank at 24 thanks to jobs in transportation, utilities, manufacturing, finance and insurance. Read the full article here.
5. Ontario Government announces $60 million investment in Waterloo Region infrastructure
In late July, the Ontario government announced they will invest up to $60.7 million in infrastructure projects across Waterloo Region. The 16 projects will include upgrades to about 90 bus stops, almost 60 replacement transit vehicles, and a new bus maintenance facility. Read the full story from The Record.
